Year 7

Year 7 at any school is always a challenging time for new students. Cobar High School has a variety of different ways to support its new students.

English

English

The aim of English in Years 7–10 is to enable students to strive towards personal excellence in using language.

In so doing, students will grow in their ability to make meaning in a widening range of language situations.

The English course comprises of 5 week long units. Students will be in a class with one English teacher for the year. English classes are not streamed; they are of mixed ability.

English is the only compulsory subject in the Higher School Certificate. Students need to use English in Years 9 and 10 to gain adequate literacy skills to enable them to successfully complete courses in Years 11 and 12.

The final placement of students in English classes will be allocated by the English Head Teacher.

English units will cover the modes of reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing/representing. They will include a study of a wide variety of types of texts

Mathematics

Mathematics

Mathematics involves the study of patterns and relationships and provides a powerful and concise means of communication. All people need to be numerate – that is, to be able to calculate, measure and estimate in a variety of situations, both theoretical and practical.

There are three levels of study in Mathematics in Years 9 and 10 – Advanced, Intermediate and Standard.

Advanced is for the most able mathematics students. It is the most algebraic of the three courses. Students who complete the Advanced course with a high level of achievement may choose to study Mathematics (2 Unit) and Mathematics Extension 1 in Years 11 and 12. A student may also choose to do General Mathematics in Years 11 and 12.

Intermediate is for students who consider themselves average in Mathematics. It is less algebraic than Advanced. Students who complete the Intermediate course at an outstanding level of achievement may consider attempting Mathematics (2U) in Years 11 and 12. However, most students doing Intermediate will proceed to General Mathematics in Years 11 and 12.

Standard is for the less able mathematics student. There is little algebra in the course and is based on practical and real-life problems. Students who complete the standard course will proceed to General Mathematics in Years 11 and 12.

Students will be advised by the Head Teacher in consultation with the classroom teachers on which level she feels is most appropriate for them. It is recommended that students choose a level that is appropriate for their needs and ability level.

There is a degree of common work between courses, especially in the Advanced and Intermediate courses. There is flexibility for students to move between courses, particularly in Year 9.

Students must have their own scientific calculator, regardless of their course level. Texts will be loaned as required by the Mathematics Department.

All School Certificate Assessment for this course will take place in Year 10. However, all knowledge and skills gained in Year 9 will be examinable in the external tests at the end of Year 10.

Human Society

Human Society and Its Environment

The key learning area of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) involves the study of people, cultures, societies and environments in different places and at different times.

RAAF

The study of HSIE is covered through two mandatory courses: Australian History and Australian Geography. Embedded in both of these courses is the study of Civics and Citizenship.

The study of Geography prepares students for adult life by developing in them an informed perspective on local, regional, national and global issues. In doing so, it forms a basis for active participation in community life and a commitment to ecological sustainability, a just society and intercultural understanding.

The study of History prepares students for adult life by providing students with understanding and insights, which challenge them to consider their rights and responsibilities and the contribution they can make to society. History provides a frame of reference that students can use to think critically and to develop informed opinions about contemporary and national and international issues.

The study of both Geography and History develops research, interpretation, analytical, organizational and communication skills that are highly valued in the workforce. HSIE leads on to the study of elective subjects such as Geography, Modern History, Legal Studies and Economics in the senior school.
