English

The aim of English in Years 7–10 (syllabus) is to enable students to strive towards personal excellence in using language. In so doing, students will grow in their ability to make meaning in a widening range of language situations.

The English 7-10 courses comprise four units each of approximately 10 weeks duration. Students will be in a class with one English teacher for the year.

English is the only compulsory subject in the Higher School Certificate. Students need to use English in Years 9 and 10 to gain adequate literacy skills to enable them to successfully complete courses in Years 11 and 12 (syllabus).

The final placement of students in English classes will be allocated by the English Head Teacher. The composition of English classes is frequently under review depending on demonstrated student application and commitment.

English units will cover the modes of reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing/representing. They include a study of a wide variety of types of texts.

Journal/Portfolio

Year 7-10 students are required to complete a journal/writing portfolio that showcases the best of their assessments and related tasks. Journal/writing portfolio requirements are outlined in week 1 term 1 and the journal/writing portfolio is collected regularly for inspection. The student journal/portfolio is due for submission and marking midway through term 4.

Students who choose not to submit their journals/portfolios are deemed to not be meeting course requirements and will be severely compromising their end of year marks.
